KJ Wood’s Charity Work and Fundraising Events

This charity montage shows the amazing work KJ Wood has done for charity since 2009.

Back in September 2009, KJ lost his biggest supporter and best friend, father, Lance Wood, to liver cancer.  In memory of his father and to thank the Macmillan nurses, who were very supportive and made every effort to ensure Lance was taken care of in every way possible, KJ wanted to make a difference and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

KJ Wood decided to organise a charity concert to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care. Taking nearly a year to organise, the first concert took place at the Gretna Social Club. Five local acts supported and performed at the event, including the band The Mass in which KJ was a member of at the time.

The first event was a massive success, with raffle and auction prizes donated by local firms. Social media messages, letters and emails flooded in with support and well wishes in the following weeks and months after this first event. This sell out event was to become the first of many LW Rock 4 Mcmillan Concerts.

Since then, there have been many LW Rock 4 Macmillan Concerts, selling out and raising thousands of pounds at each event. Sponsorship deals started to come in from local businesses, support from top name acts pledging their time to appear at the events, with radio and newspaper coverage of the concerts hitting the press.

Each year the sell-out concerts have got bigger, with larger venues, more top name acts, bigger raffle prizes including a quad bike were donated by one of the sponsors. TV personalities and top name acts have provided their support including: Mick Miller, Black Lace, Les Gibson (BGT), Jimmy Cricket, Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets), Edwin Starr Band with Angelo Starr, plus many more.

The challenge to do bigger and better things increased, with the decision in 2014 to add something extra to the fund-raising activities. The Big 5 Challenge 4 Macmillan was accepted by KJ with the support of friends, family, sponsors and supporters. The challenges – Run the Cumbrian Run, climb the National 3 Peaks in 24 hours (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, Mount Snowden), write an original song and have it played on Radio Cumbria, perform seven gigs in three days in various venues across Cumbria and skydive from 14000 feet – were suggested via social media and drawn out of a hat Live on Air on Radio Cumbria.

KJ Wood’s charity work has continued since, completing the Great North Run, The Cumbrian Run and The 3 Peaks Challenge for a second time.

KJ’s Efforts so far have raised in excess of £30,000, and the charity work continues…
